How Does Sludge Drying Work and Why Is It Important?

Drying lowers the water content of sludge, leaving a light end product that is easy to haul and store. Agricultural businesses can also use it as compost. Additional benefits of this process include:

• Stabilizing sludge: Drying stabilizes sludge, eliminating odors and pathogenic organisms and reducing its susceptibility to decay.
• Simplifying treatment: Extracting moisture from sludge renders it more suitable for thermochemical treatments, such as torrefaction, pyrolysis and incineration.
• Easing disposal: Dry sludge can exist as pellets when dehydrated to over 65% dry solids or powder at over 90% dry solids.

The ESD Waste2Water Industrial Sludge Dryer

The Rotary Drum Vacuum (RDV) System can reduce sludge moisture content by 85% or more. It’s suitable for heavy equipment yards, metal finishing, waster haulers, rental yards, aggregate yards and concrete batch plants. Businesses can use the system to dry mud and sludge as well as waste from washing turf painting equipment and waste from metal finishing processes.

The RDV is available in one-disc and three-disc sizes. The single-disc sludge drying unit has a 150-gallon capacity and a 20 cubic feet per minute (CFM) vacuum. It operates under a one-phase, 240-volt power source. In contrast, the larger three-disc dryer has a 985-gallon capacity and a 44 CFM vacuum. It can run under 240-volt or 480-volt three-phase power.
